PURPOSE

The purpose of this CME Program is to develop and deliver clinically relevant, evidence-based CME activities in an effort to align practitioner’s behavior with current clinical guidelines and the evidence to improve their competence and the care they provide their patients.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this CME activity, through the use of clinical vignettes emphasizing Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to formulate a differential, make a diagnosis, and develop a plan for the prevention and/or therapeutic management of the various disorders presented.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC:

TOPIC 1: Hepatitis.

Upon completion of this session, using evidence- based guidelines and consensus statements from NIH, CDC, AGA, ACIP, AAP and Association for the Study of Liver Disease, the participant should be able to: ^{EBM, GL, COMP}

1. Interpret the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of hepatitis A, B, C, D or E.
2. Relate differences in complications.
3. Interpret diagnostic testing of the hepatitis viruses.

TOPIC 2: Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Upon completion of this session, using position statements from the AGA and evidence-based guidelines from ACOG, the participant should be able to: ^{EBM, GL, COMP}

1. 1. Interpret the clinical manifestations of H. pylori infection.
   2. Use the methods for testing for H. pylori infection.
   3. Treat H. pylori infection.

TOPIC 3 Meningitis and Meningoencephalitis.

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to use the evidence-based guidelines of the IDSA and the CDC to: ^{EBM, GL, COMP}

1. Evaluate the epidemiology of meningitis and the different types of meningitis.
2. Interpret clinical signs and symptoms of different types of meningitis.
3. Apply the indications for lumbar puncture (LP) and interpret LP results.
4. Evaluate treatment options and the need for hospitalization and public health notification.

TOPIC 4: Multi-Drug Resistant Infections.

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: ^{EBM, COMP}

1. Asses to identify and avoid or minimize the urgent and serious threats of drug resistance as identified by the CDC and IDSA.
2. Apply the most effective and appropriate treatment and strategy for each infection.
3. Determine when specialist referral will result in an improved outcome.

TOPIC 5: Acute Pharyngitis and Sinusitis.

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: ^{GL, COMP}

1. Determine the features and predictors that guide your diagnostic testing of acute pharyngitis.
2. Apply the best courses of treatment and overall management based on pharyngitis treatment guidelines.
3. Develop a framework for treatment and antibiotic prescribing for acute sinusitis.

TOPIC 6: Soft Tissue and Bone Infections.

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: ^{GL, EBM, COMP}

1. Construct an approach to making the diagnosis of common skin and soft tissue infections.
2. Assess common infections to include streptococcal and staphylococcal infections and necrotizing fasciitis, diabetic foot infections, bite wound infections and bone and joint infections.
3. Apply appropriate treatment and management of these commonly seen infections and decide when specialist referral is indicated as per the current IDSA Guidelines for skin and soft tissue infections.
