  1. Determine characteristics suggesting a thunderclap headache.
  2. Construct a differential diagnosis beyond subarachnoid hemorrhage in the patient presenting with a thunderclap headache as per the ACEP clinical policy on acute headache.

TOPIC 3: Neck Pain
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the injuries that can occur in the neck region of athletes and athletic individuals.
  2. Develop a logical differential diagnosis for any athletic or active individual presenting with neck pain.
  3. Determine the rationale behind treatment approaches to various neck injuries as per the Cochrane Library Reviews and ACR (Rheumatology).
  4. Assess and order laboratory and imaging studies to assist in the diagnosis of neck injuries and pathologies as per the ACR Radiology Criteria and Guidelines.

  1. Detect pleural effusion on a chest radiograph in its various manifestations.
  2. Analyze a CT scan of the chest for findings that differentiate benign from malignant pleural effusion.

  3. Develop rehabilitation points and advice for athletic or active individuals presenting with stress injuries and fractures, with consideration of the specific bone or bones involved.
  4. Assess and order laboratory and imaging studies to assist in the diagnosis and prognostication of stress injuries and fractures as per the ACR Guidelines.

TOPIC 3: Lower Back Pain
Upon completion of this session, the participants should be able to:

  1. Apply an evidence-based approach to the evaluation of non-traumatic back pain.
  2. Differentiate the “red flags” that should heighten the suspicion for serious pathology in the evaluation of back pain.
  3. Assess and differentiate both effective as well as disproved therapies in the treatment of back pain using the Cochrane Database.
  4. Specify potential pitfalls in the treatment and disposition of low back pain.

  2. Identify the essentials of early ED care for the trauma patient using a case-based approach.
  3. Discuss the “essentials” of the effective interfaculty trauma transfer.
