Failed PANRE, a situation I run into more often than you think.
After healing about to many providers who have reached out to me after they have dealt with a failed PANRE I thought that something had to be done on a personal level. I cannot sit by idly as this happens to our profession, the profession that I love.
Providers used to have the option of taking the Pathway II Exam, but that no longer is available.
Here is my email to the NCCPA about changing the PANRE requirements for Physician Assistants so that I don’t see as many “Failed PANRE’ subject lines in my email.
NCCPA,
Greetings. First and foremost, I love being a PA. It’s the greatest profession on the planet (even Forbes thinks so.) I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with James Cannon (NCCPA President) this last year when I presented a lecture at MAPA. I am a huge PA advocate, supporter and educator.
I am deeply concerned about our veteran PAs and the new PANRE requirements. I teach a board review course, and I am filling up with senior ortho, derm and psych PAs that have not taken an exam in 30 years. I hear almost weekly, “I may have to retire” because of this.
I believe this is making our PA profession weaker. We are losing our most senior providers. This weakens American’s health care.
Can anything be changed?
If interested/willing, I would be honored to fly to visit you folks to discuss options that strengthens the PA profession. I understand we need to demonstrate clinical competence and thus test our senior PAs. I am all for it. Yet, if we have a PA that has been in ortho for 30+ years, why do they need to know pediatric immunizations?
I understand we were founded on being primary care providers, yet, this is no longer our calling. We are in specialty fields. I respect what you folks have implemented with the CAQs. Let’s blend them.
Let’s allow our veterans to specialize. Yes, they will be locked to that field. I love the lateral mobility as a PA. It would be a travesty for an derm PA of 30 years to go into OB/GYN. It’s apples to oranges.
I respect the NCCPA. I respectfully feel the new PANRE hurts our profession.
Let’s fix it before we lose our veterans.
John,
I just purchased your 16 DVD package, because I failed the PANRE last month. I have been a PA for twenty five years. I took my PANRE six years ago and pass it with no difficulties. This year is a different story. Although I am working in Urgent Care for the last five years something didn’t go right. I studied using one of the best manual available which I purchased in Amazon, but it didn’t help. To make it even more difficult I was diagnosed and treated for cancer of the prostate, and also have a possible sarcoma in my right leg that could have affected me due to the stress. I paid $ 400.00 to the NCCPA and there was nothing in their stipulation that if you have an illness you could cancel the exam. I was told by the Testing Center even that I didn’t feel well to take the Exam last month or forfeit my fee. Much later after failing the exam I was told that I could have contacted the NCCPA and perhaps I could have postponed the exam. I find this whole process ridicule and expensive to most experienced PA’s I am just as you in the front line working my tail off fighting diseases, and even training PA students, and having prospective student shadow me. Its an embarrassment that I had to fail the PANRE at my age. I am a senior PA semi-retired. I was trained by military and retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years. I do not know why the NCCPA put us in this predicament. I would have rather take a refresher course such as yours like the DVD’s that I am now watching this should be mandated by NCCPA rather than taking five hours exam. We are too busy practicing medicine fort such requirement. We already have to log 100 CME hours and meet State boards license requirement. I prefer a refresher course by DVD designed by you and then after each completed DVD to answer interactive questions to see if we understood the material and then NCCPA certify us. I think that for any one who is senior in the PA profession meaning fifteen years or more a refresher course is all we need. My hope is that after I finish your review course I can pass the PANRE, and perhaps I could finish five more years of PA work, and retire fully. Thank you so much for all that you are doing and your DVD’s are excellent. You have a stage presence and have excellent teaching style. Hope to meet you one day.
